Flammable Liquid Cabinets

Flammable liquid cabinets are required in order for businesses to safely store flammable and combustible liquids. These stainless steel cabinets feature fire-tested walls, latches, and hinges to keep them strong and prevent explosions.

Though many stainless steel cabinets offer some fire resistance, flammable liquid cabinets are specially designed to meet applicable health and safety laws. Businesses must take careful inventory of their own flammable liquids and may want to consider buying a cabinet, even if they aren’t required to do so by law.

Meeting Legal Requirements

Though individual states may have additional laws regarding hazardous liquids, most follow the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

OSHA uses many recommendations from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which publishes NFPA Code 30 to govern industry standards for fireproofing.

OSHA Construction Requirements

OSHA and the NFPA require that cabinets for flammable liquids have double-walled construction with 18-gauge steel and 1.5” air space between walls. There is also an option for fire-resistant plywood cabinets, but these are less common.

Flammable liquid cabinet doors open with a three-point latch and have a deep door sill to contain spills. Typically, flammable liquid cabinets are not ventilated in order to maintain fire resistance.

Paint Color and Markings

Flammable liquid cabinets should be clearly marked in a bright color. Cabinets are usually bright yellow and use a powder coat finish paint to make them resistant to acids and other corrosives. The cabinet itself should also be labeled, “Flammable,” in clear, large letters.

Multiple Cabinets

OSHA also regulates quantities of flammable materials. OSHA regulations state that a single cabinet cannot be used to store more than 60 gallons of Class 1, 2, or 3 flammable or combustible liquids, or more than 120 gallons of Class 4 flammable liquids.

Large warehouses and factories may need multiple cabinets in order to remain in compliance with the law. Any flammable materials and containers stored in a cabinet must be small enough to not interfere with closing doors. Groups of three or more cabinets should be separated by fireproof walls or at least 100 feet apart.
