Aircraft Racks

Aircraft racks, sometimes called airplane shelves, are unique storage systems designed explicitly for aircraft and aircraft component storage. Most models look like boxes that stand taller than they are wide. They are made with high-strength, lightweight materials such as titanium or tungsten, allowing one or more relatively small racks to support the weight of the entire aircraft.

This rack type is often constructed using a frame-like configuration, allowing the material to bend slightly to support the aircraft’s weight. These racking systems usually offer mounting holes to ensure the aircraft does not move on the rack.

Aircraft racks are ideal for warehouses that store fully or partially-constructed aircraft as well as operations that install or repair aircraft parts or components, such as engine parts.

High-Density Mobile Shelving

High-density mobile shelving is another popular way to store aircraft and aircraft parts. These systems combine two types of racking: high-density racking and mobile shelving.

High-density racking improves storage density by facilitating the use of the facility’s vertical space, while mobile shelving is designed to increase inventory selectivity. Aviation storage facilities can use these systems to improve their storage density without compromising selectivity.

While these systems come in various configurations, they usually involve three primary components:

• A heavy-duty storage system, like industrial racking or shelving, stores the inventory
• A movement system, such as an autonomous railing that moves the racks for access
• A retrieval device, such as a cart, conveyor belt, or platform. It allows easy retrieval of the inventory that needs to be accessed

Inventory is stored in the storage system, which is strong enough to hold heavy aviation items. When a piece of inventory needs to be retrieved, the system manipulates the racks to make the necessary inventory available for retrieval. The item will then be moved to the cart for picking.

These systems are desirable for facilities that store a high number of SKUs, where the ability to retrieve any product in the warehouse at any time is paramount.

Cantilever Racks

Cantilever racks are ideal for storing long, irregular objects, such as wings or fuselages. They consist of an upright, which supports the weight of the inventory, and cantilever arms, which stick out from the upright at a slightly inclined angle. Objects are laid across the angled arms.

High-Density Pallet Racking Systems

High-density industrial shelving pallet racks are the traditional industrial warehouse shelving systems found in warehouses worldwide. While many larger aviation-related items cannot be stored using these systems, smaller items can be palletized and stored on them.
